It is particularly involved in mood management and is associated with the state of happiness when it is at a balanced level, limiting risk-taking and thus encouraging the individual to maintain a favourable situation. It is therefore essential for the survival of mammals, including humans, and has an antagonistic effect on that of dopamine, which encourages risk-taking and activation of the reward system.
